Mauryan Empire

Under Emperor Ashoka, the Mauryan Empire extends into Saurashtra. The Junagadh Rock Inscription of Ashoka and later the Rudradaman inscription at Junagadh mark this period.

Maitraka Dynasty of Vallabhi

The Maitrakas rule much of Saurashtra from their capital at Vallabhi (modern Vala), establishing a period of cultural and economic prosperity in the region.

Xuanzang Visits Vadnagar

The Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) visits Vadnagar, the traditional ancestral home of the Nagar Brahmin community, documenting it as a flourishing centre.

Foundation of Gondal State

Jadeja Rajput Thakore Shri Kumbhoji I Meramanji receives the villages of Ardoi, Gondal, and others, establishing Gondal State. The state would grow to encompass approximately 1,000 square miles and over 175 villages.

Naulakha Palace Built in Gondal

The Naulakha Palace is constructed on the banks of the Gondali River, named for its cost of nine lakhs (900,000 rupees). It features stone carvings, jharokha balconies, and a pillared courtyard — now a museum.

British Kathiawar Agency

The British establish formal political relations with the states of Kathiawar, creating the agency system that would oversee over 200 princely states and estates in the peninsula.

Maharaja Bhagvatsinhji — The Doctor Maharaja

Maharaja Sir Bhagvatsinhji, who held a medical degree from Edinburgh, reigns for 75 years. He abolishes all taxes, introduces compulsory education for girls (1892), ends purdah, and elevates Gondal to a first-class state with an 11-gun salute.

Indian National Congress Founded

The founding of the Indian National Congress marks the beginning of organised political movement toward self-governance, eventually engaging the princely states in questions of independence and integration.

Quit India Movement

The Quit India movement galvanises the independence struggle. Across Gujarat and Saurashtra, communities including those in smaller estates participate in the movement for freedom.

Indian Independence

India gains independence from British rule. The princely states face the choice of acceding to India or Pakistan, beginning the process of integration led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

United State of Kathiawar Formed

Sardar Patel personally inaugurates the merger of 222 states into the United State of Kathiawar. Gondal's Maharaja Bhojrajjisinhji signs the Instrument of Accession. Estates like Vasavad become part of this new entity, ending centuries of hereditary local governance.

Renamed United State of Saurashtra

The United State of Kathiawar is renamed the United State of Saurashtra, with Maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji of Nawanagar as Rajpramukh.

States Reorganisation

Under the States Reorganisation Act, Saurashtra is merged into the bilingual Bombay State, beginning the next phase of administrative transformation for the region.

Formation of Gujarat State

Gujarat is carved out of Bombay State as a separate state. Vasavad becomes part of Rajkot District in the new state of Gujarat.
