About Vasavad

A village of historical significance in the Kathiawar peninsula

A Princely Heritage

Vasavad, situated near the historic town of Gondal in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, was once a princely estate (thakurat) governed by the Desai family. The village carries the imprint of centuries of governance, culture, and community life that shaped the Kathiawar peninsula.

During the era of princely states, Vasavad was part of the complex tapestry of over 200 small and large states that comprised the Kathiawar Agency. Following Indian independence in 1947, these states were integrated into the Indian Union under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, forming the United State of Saurashtra before merging into Gujarat in 1960.

The Nagar Connection

Vasavad holds a special place in the history of the Nagar Brahmin community — one of Gujarat's most distinguished Brahmin communities known for their contributions to administration, literature, and social reform.

The village has been a significant centre for the Nagar community, producing families that played vital roles in governance, education, and the cultural life of Saurashtra. This website aims to document these connections and preserve the stories that bind the community to this land.
