The Significance of a Written Chronicle from 1928

In 1928 — Samvat 2484 by the Vikram calendar — a remarkable document was published from the Navjivar Press. Titled 'Vatan no Vrutant — Vasavad,' it was the first known written chronicle of the village of Vasavad.

The Author: Chhotalal Desai

The Vrutant was authored by Shri Chhotalal Desai, a member of the Desai family that had governed Vasavad for generations. His decision to document Vasavad's life was an act of preservation.

What the Vrutant Documents

The Vrutant records the demographics of the village, including the presence of over 111 Nagar families. It documents family lineages, governance philosophy, and stone inscriptions documenting governance principles.

The 1978 Reprint

The Vrutant's importance was recognised by a later generation when it was reprinted in 1978. The reprint included a foreword dated 23 November 1978 and was dedicated to Vinayak Manilprasad Desai of Gandhinagar.

The Vrutant and the Vasavad Heritage Project

The Vasavad Heritage Project can be understood as a digital continuation of the mission that Chhotalal Desai began in 1928. The fundamental impulse is the same: to document, to preserve, and to share the heritage of Vasavad so that it is not lost to time.
